Welcome to Jaipur

The capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur is rich in history and culture. Here the past comes alive in magnificent forts and palaces. The bustling bazaars of Jaipur, famous for jewellery, fabric and shoes, possess a timeless quality and  are surely a treasure-trove for the shoppers. The plains of Rajasthan of which Jaipur is the capital once thundered and echoed with clash of swords andthe drums of wars.Built in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh-II, Jaipur was the first planned city of its time (the earlier planned city in northern India having been built near Taxila sometime in the 2nd century BC). Jaipur was planned by Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya, a Bengali architect, in a grid system with wide straight avenues, roads, streets and lanes and uniform rows of shops on either side of the main bazaars, all arranged in nine rectangular city sectors (chokris). The city itself is an attractive creation worthy of universal admiration. There is a feast in store for tourists. The Palace quarter encloses the HawaMahalpalace complex, formal gardens, and a small lake.
Nahargarh Fort, which was the residence of the King Sawai Jai Singh II, crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city. The observatory, JantarMantar, is one of theWorld Heritage Sites.

Jaipur district is the tenth most populous district in India. It is spread over 11,152 sq. km and has a population of 6.7 million as per 2011 census.
